Eventful tours involving nature, culture and history

Hikers on the border patrol path, the former area patrolled by GDR border troops

The roughly 120-km-long section of the Green Belt between Mitwitz and Mödlareuth stretches almost to the border with the Czech Republic. The region is an El Dorado for nature and sports enthusiasts, and for those interested in culture and regional cuisine.

There is a choice of 15 tours in all, each of them crossing Federal borders, offering the chance to explore the Green Belt on foot or by bike, and to get to know the many attractions in the surrounding area.

On foot: The twelve hiking trails are laid out as circular routes, and are well signposted. They all start and finish in places that are easy to reach by public transport.

By bike: The three cycle routes are ideal for tours with integrated rail transfers, so that cyclists can cover part of the route on trains with convenient cycle transport facilities. This means that you can experience more, and casually avoid a few steep hills...

Experience at first hand: Trained nature guides and park rangers offer specialised tours on the Green Belt, and bring their guests closer to the nature and history of the area.

Individually informed: If you prefer exploring on your own, you can use your mobile phone or mp3 player as a mobile guide on five of the hiking tours. Sound documents with interesting information on sights can be heard at numerous sites, as well as descriptions by contemporary witnesses of events on the former inner German border. Audio-guides for hire are available from four information points.

The Tour Guide and the Experience Map for the "Experience Green Belt" can be requested free of charge from the Regionalverbund Thüringer Wald and from the Frankenwald Tourismus, or obtained directly from the Nature park information centres and the Tourist Information Offices on the Green Belt.

All the audio documents can also be heard conveniently at your computer and downloaded: www.gruenesband.tomis.mobi
